How Professor's Lake Was Formed
Professor's Lake has an interesting past. It wasn't always a lake!
From Gravel Pit to Lake
The area where Professor's Lake now sits was once a busy gravel pit. Starting in 1918, workers dug up lots of sand and gravel from this spot. They removed about 20 million tonnes of these materials over the years. The gravel pit was used again from 1954 to 1973.
The Lake's Creation
As the digging went deeper, the workers eventually hit the water table. This is the level underground where the soil is full of water. When they hit this water, the large hole they had dug started to fill up. This is how Professor's Lake was created!
Naming the Lake
After the lake formed, improvements were made in 1973. The company that owned the gravel pit decided to name the new lake. They chose to honor Hans Abromeit, a German professor of economics. He was the president of the company at the time.
