Progreso is a busy port city in the Mexican state of Yucatán. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which is in the northwest part of the state. Progreso is about 30 minutes north of Mérida, the biggest city on the Yucatán Peninsula.
In 2010, Progreso had about 37,369 people living there. This made it the sixth largest community in Yucatán. The city is also the main town for the area around it, called the Progreso Municipality. This area covers about 270 square kilometers (104 square miles).
Progreso is very important for two main things: fishing and shipping. All the large shipping containers that arrive here are sent out to Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo.
This city is also a popular spot for big cruise ships. It is becoming a well-known beach resort. Cruise ship passengers arrive at a very long pier, called the Terminal Remota. This pier stretches out about 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) into the Gulf of Mexico. From the pier, visitors can go explore Progreso, Mérida, or ancient Maya civilization sites like Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun.
During July and August, the beaches in Progreso get very crowded. Many people from Mérida come to spend their summer here. They enjoy the cooler seaside weather.
