Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A project is a special kind of task. It's a temporary effort that aims to create something new. This could be a unique product, a service, or a specific result. Think of it as a journey with a clear start and end point, designed to achieve a particular goal.

What Does 'Project' Mean?

The word project comes from an old Latin word, projectum. This word means "to throw something forwards." It combines pro- (meaning "before" or "forward") and jacere (meaning "to throw"). So, originally, a project was "something that comes before anything else is done." It was like a plan or an idea.

In the 1950s, the meaning of "project" changed a bit. This happened when new ways of managing projects became popular. Now, "project" means both the plan and the act of carrying it out.

Key Features of a Project

Projects have a few important things that make them different from everyday tasks:

  • Temporary: Every project has a clear start and end date. This doesn't mean it has to be short. A project could last for days, months, or even years. But it will always finish.
  • Unique Results: A project always creates something new. This could be a brand-new invention or an improved version of something that already exists. The outcome is special and different.
  • Progressive Elaboration: Projects often start with a general idea. Because they are unique, you can't plan everything perfectly from the start. So, projects are planned and carried out in steps or phases. As the project goes on, the team learns more. They then make more detailed plans for the next steps. This way, the project becomes clearer as it moves forward.

Projects are different from regular operations. Operations are continuous and repeat the same tasks, like a factory making the same product every day. Projects, however, are temporary and create unique results.

Most projects need resources like people, money, and materials. They usually follow a detailed plan. This plan considers outside factors and challenges. Planning, doing, and checking a project is what project management is all about. For very big projects, a special temporary organization might be set up. This includes a project team and other work teams.

Large projects can also be broken down into smaller subprojects. A program is a group of related projects that work together for a bigger goal.
