Prokopis Pavlopoulos was the President of Greece from 2015 to 2020. He is a retired politician and a member of the New Democracy political party. Before becoming president, he served as the Minister of the Interior from 2004 to 2009. He was followed by Katerina Sakellaropoulou, who became the first woman President of Greece.

Studying and Teaching
Prokopis Pavlopoulos was born in Kalamata, Greece, on July 10, 1950. His father was a high school principal. He studied Law at the University of Athens starting in 1968. In 1975, he went to Paris, France, to study Public Law at the Panthéon-Assas University. He earned his PhD in 1977. After serving in the Greek Army, he returned to the University of Athens. He became a lecturer in 1980 and a full professor of Administrative Law in 1989.
Political Career
Early Steps in Politics
Pavlopoulos began his political career in 1974. He worked as a secretary for Michail Stasinopoulos, who was the first President after a period of military rule in Greece. From 1989 to 1990, he was an alternate Minister and government spokesman. He also worked as a legal advisor for President Konstantinos Karamanlis from 1990 to 1995. In 1996, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the New Democracy party. He represented the Athens A area. He was re-elected several times until 2014.
Minister of the Interior
After the 2004 election, which his party won, Pavlopoulos became the Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation. This happened on March 10, 2004. In 2007, the Interior Ministry was combined with the Ministry of Public Order. Pavlopoulos then became the Minister of the Interior and Public Order.
President of Greece


On February 17, 2015, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras suggested Pavlopoulos as a candidate for President of Greece. On February 18, 2015, the Greek Parliament elected him as the new President. He received 233 votes. He took office on March 13, 2015, succeeding Karolos Papoulias. His term as President ended on March 13, 2020.
Personal Life
Prokopis Pavlopoulos is married to Vlassia Pavlopoulou-Peltsemi. They have two daughters, Maria and Zoe, and one son, Vasilis.
