Prokopis Pavlopoulos is a Greek politician who served as the President of Greece from 2015 to 2020. He was a member of the New Democracy political party. Before becoming president, he was the Minister of the Interior from 2004 to 2009. After his term, Katerina Sakellaropoulou became the first woman to be President of Greece on March 13, 2020.

Learning and Early Career
Prokopis Pavlopoulos was born in Kalamata, Greece, on July 10, 1950. His father was a high school principal and a classics teacher. Prokopis grew up in his hometown.
University Studies
In 1968, after finishing school, he began studying law at the University of Athens. He later received a scholarship to study in Paris, France. In 1975, he earned a special diploma from the Paris Panthéon-Assas University. He then completed his PhD in Public Law in 1977.
Military Service and Teaching
After his studies, Pavlopoulos returned to Greece. He served in the Hellenic Army from 1978 to 1979. In 1980, he became a lecturer at the University of Athens. He continued to advance, becoming a full professor of Administrative Law in 1989. He also taught at Panthéon-Assas University in 1986.
Political Journey
Prokopis Pavlopoulos had a long and important political career in Greece. He held several key positions before becoming president.
Starting in Politics
In 1974, Pavlopoulos worked as a secretary for Michail Stasinopoulos, who was the first President after a period of political change in Greece. From 1989 to 1990, he was a government spokesman. He also worked as a legal advisor to President Konstantinos Karamanlis from 1990 to 1995.
Member of Parliament
Pavlopoulos was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1996. He represented the New Democracy party. He was re-elected several times for the Athens A area, serving until 2014. During this time, he also served as the party's spokesman.
Minister of the Interior
In March 2004, after his party won the election, Pavlopoulos became the Minister of the Interior, Public Administration and Decentralisation. This role involved managing many important government services. In 2007, his ministry merged with the Ministry of Public Order, and he continued as Minister of the Interior and Public Order until 2009.
President of Greece


On February 17, 2015, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras suggested Pavlopoulos as a candidate for President of Greece. On February 18, 2015, the Greek Parliament elected him as the new President. He received 233 votes. He took office on March 13, 2015, succeeding Karolos Papoulias. He served as president until March 13, 2020.
Family Life
Prokopis Pavlopoulos is married to Vlassia Pavlopoulou-Peltsemi. They have three children: two daughters named Maria and Zoe, and a son named Vasilis.
