Protection is a small city located in Comanche County, Kansas, in the United States. In 2020, about 498 people lived there.

History of Protection

Protection was started in 1884. The city got its name because of strong support for a "protective tariff" during the 1884 presidential election. A protective tariff is a tax on goods brought into a country, designed to protect local businesses from foreign competition. The first post office in Protection opened on August 27, 1884.

Protection became famous across the country and even internationally in 1957. This happened when the National Polio Foundation chose it as the main place to give out free Salk vaccine shots for polio. Because of this, everyone in Protection was protected from polio.

Education in Protection

The public schools in Protection are part of the Comanche County USD 300 school district. South Central Elementary and South Central Middle School are located in Protection. The old Protection High School building is also on campus. However, South Central High School is in Coldwater. The mascot for South Central High School is the Timberwolves.

Before the schools joined together, the Protection Panthers football team won state championships in 1978 and 1983.
