Provolt is a small place in Jackson County, Oregon, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a neighborhood or area that doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Provolt is located about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Grants Pass. It is close to the Applegate River, right on the border between Jackson and Josephine counties.
Provolt's History
Provolt was named after a pioneer family who were among the first settlers in the area. Around 1875, a man named Samuel Provolt started the first store there, which became known as the Provolt Store.
In 1895, a post office was opened in Provolt. At that time, the area was part of Josephine County. Mary E. Provolt was the very first person to be in charge of the post office. The post office served the community for many years before it was closed down in 1955.
What's in Provolt Today
Today, Provolt is a very small community. According to an author named Ralph Friedman, the main part of Provolt's business area is still the historic country store. This old store has been a central spot for the community for a long time.
Besides the store, Provolt also has a grange hall. A grange hall is a meeting place for a group called the Grange, which is an organization for farmers and their families. This hall is located just one block south of the historic store.
