Psilocybe muliercula is a type of mushroom that belongs to the Hymenogastraceae family. This mushroom is found naturally in Mexico. It is part of a group of similar mushrooms known as the Zapotecorum section.
How This Mushroom Was Discovered
Scientists first learned about Psilocybe muliercula from dried samples. These samples were bought from the Matlatzinca people, who are Native people of the Americas. They were found in a market in Tenango del Valle, a town in Mexico.
In 1958, a botanist named Roger Heim described this mushroom. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. He called it Psilocybe wassonii. In the same year, another scientist named Rolf Singer and Alexander Hanchett Smith also described it. They named it Psilocybe muliercula. The name muliercula means "little women."
At first, scientists thought this mushroom grew in Pine forests around Tenango del Valle. But after more trips to the area, a Mexican mycologist named Gaston Guzman found it. A mycologist is a scientist who studies fungi, like mushrooms. He found it about 10 kilometers from Tenango del Valle. It was growing in an Fir forest on the side of the Nevado de Toluca mountain.
Where Psilocybe muliercula Grows
Psilocybe muliercula likes to grow in certain types of forests. You can find it in Fir forests and Pine forests. These forests are usually high up in the mountains.
It grows at elevations between 2,600 and 3,500 meters above sea level. This mushroom is often found in places where there have been landslides.
