Pueblo Bello means 'Pretty Village'. It's a town and a municipality (like a county) in the northern part of the Department of Cesar, Colombia. This special place is nestled in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. It's home to the Arhuaco people, who are Amerindians (native people of the Americas). The Arhuaco people call it Arumake and see it as a sacred place. Pueblo Bello is also famous for growing lots of coffee. It's the biggest coffee producer in the Caribbean Region of Colombia.

Exploring the Geography of Pueblo Bello

Pueblo Bello is unique because it's the only municipality located entirely within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. It shares borders with the Department of Magdalena to the north. To the east and south, it borders Valledupar, and to the southwest, it's next to El Copey.

Pueblo Bello is also part of a special Forest Reserve. It includes parts of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park and an indigenous reserve. Two rivers, the Ariguaní River and the Ariguanicito River, flow through the municipality.

Pueblo Bello's Climate and Weather

Pueblo Bello has a pleasant mountain climate. The average temperature throughout the year is usually between 16°C and 22°C (about 61°F to 72°F). This makes it a cool and comfortable place to live.

A Look at Pueblo Bello's History

The area where Pueblo Bello is located was first home to the Arhuaco people and the Chimila Maconganas. When the Spanish arrived during the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the first European explorers were led by Lope de Orozco. They called this beautiful area Valle de Taironaca, which means 'Valley of Taironaca'.

Founding of the Village

Captain Antonio Florez founded the village around 1590. He first named it Dulce Nombre de Jesus. However, because of constant attacks from the Chimila people, the town had to move closer to Valledupar. The original village was then called Pueblo Viejo (Old Village). Later, in the 20th Century, its name was changed to Pueblo Bello. The new town that was built closer to Valledupar was named Nueva Valencia.

Becoming a Municipality

For a long time, Pueblo Bello was a corregimiento (a smaller administrative division) of Valledupar. But in 1997, it became its own municipality. This happened through an official order called Ordinance 037 on December 10, 1997. This change was officially recognized and put into effect on May 6, 1998, by Decree 000239.

Culture and Traditions in Pueblo Bello

Pueblo Bello is a place rich in culture and traditions. The town celebrates two main events that bring people together.

Festivals and Celebrations

One important event is the Festival del Café y la Mochila Arhuaca. This festival celebrates two very important things for the region: coffee, which is a major crop, and the mochila Arhuaca, which is a traditional woven bag made by the Arhuaco people. It's a time to enjoy local products and learn about the Arhuaco culture.

The town also holds "Regional Olympics," where people can compete in different sports and activities. On July 16 each year, Pueblo Bello celebrates the Roman Catholic tradition of the Virgin of El Carmen. This is a religious holiday honored by many people in the community.
