Puerto Francisco de Orellana is a city in eastern Ecuador. People also call it El Coca. It is the capital city of the Orellana Province.

This city is deep inside the Amazon Rainforest. It sits where the Coca River and the Napo River meet. A smaller river, the Payamino River, also joins the Napo here. As of 2022, about 51,281 people live in Puerto Francisco de Orellana. Many tourists visit the city before heading into the rainforest. It has its own airport, called Francisco de Orellana Airport.

Who Was Francisco de Orellana?

The city is named after a famous explorer, Francisco de Orellana. He was one of the first Europeans to explore this part of the Amazon. He discovered where the Coca River and the Napo River join together.

Orellana's First Journey

It is believed that Orellana started his journey from where the city is today. He sailed down the Napo River and eventually reached the mighty Amazon River. During his trip, he met many different tribes. Some stories say he saw tribes where women also fought in battles. This is how the Amazon River got its name, from the legendary Amazons of Greek myths. Orellana finally made it all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Orellana's Later Expeditions

After his first amazing journey, Orellana tried a second expedition. He wanted to explore more of the Amazon. However, this trip was much harder. He sadly died near the Amazon delta, unable to find his way through the maze of rivers.

What's the Weather Like?

Puerto Francisco de Orellana has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it is warm and wet all year round. The city gets a lot of rain throughout the year.
