A Look at Puerto Nuevo's History
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that only 706 people lived in the Puerto Nuevo barrio back then. Over the years, more and more people have moved to Puerto Nuevo.
