Where is Puka Pukara Located?

Puka Pukara is in southern Peru. It is about 7 kilometers (4-5 miles) from the city of Cusco. You can find it on the road that leads to Písac. The fort sits on high ground. From here, you can see the Cusco valley and a place called Tambo Machay. This high spot gave the Inca military a great view. It helped them watch over important parts of their empire.

The History of Puka Pukara

We don't know as much about Puka Pukara as other Inca ruins. But many experts believe it was built when Pachacuti was the ruler. He was the ninth ruler of the Inca Empire. This means Puka Pukara was one of the later buildings constructed by the Inca.

The stones used for the walls are not perfectly shaped. They are stacked together in a way that looks a bit uneven. This suggests the buildings were built quickly. It seems the military headquarters at Puka Pukara was needed in a hurry. The stones might have looked red when they were new. This is because of the iron in the limestone used to build the walls.

There is some discussion about what Puka Pukara was really used for. It was definitely a military base. Its location on a main road made it perfect for spotting trouble. Inca officials might have used it as a checkpoint. They could stop suspicious people from going further into the empire. It also could have been a resting place for soldiers.

Another idea is that it was a place for travelers and nobles to rest. It had luxurious baths, canals, plazas, and fountains. These features suggest it was a comfortable stop for important people.
