Pumasillo is a majestic mountain located in the Vilcabamba mountain range in the Andes mountains of Peru. Its name comes from the Quechua language, where puma means "cougar" or "puma," and sillu means "claw." So, Pumasillo means "puma claw," which is a cool name for a mountain!

This mountain is about 5,991 meters (19,656 feet) tall. Sometimes, the name Pumasillo, or Sacsarayoc, is used to talk about the entire group of mountains in that area. This group includes the peaks Pumasillo, Sacsarayoc, and Lasunayoc.

Pumasillo is found in the Cusco Region, specifically in the La Convención Province. The town of Santa Teresa in Peru has parts of its land on the slopes of this impressive mountain.

How Tall Is Pumasillo?

Pumasillo stands very tall at 5,991 meters (19,656 feet). Other ways of measuring its height have shown slightly different numbers. For example, a digital map called SRTM measured it at 5,976 meters. Another map, TanDEM-X, measured it at 5,849 meters.

The mountain's topographic prominence is 1,397 meters. This means it rises 1,397 meters above the lowest point connecting it to a higher mountain. Pumasillo is considered a "Mountain Subrange" because it stands out so much.

Its "parent peak" is Salcantay, which is another famous mountain nearby. Pumasillo is about 30.9 kilometers away from any higher land.

Who Climbed Pumasillo First?

The first time anyone successfully climbed Pumasillo was on July 26, 1957. Two climbers from the United Kingdom, Mike Gravina and Simon Clark, were the first to reach its summit. They climbed the mountain using its west ridge.
