The Punta Almina Lighthouse (which is Faro de Punta Almina in Spanish) is a lighthouse located on the Peninsula of Almina. This peninsula is part of the city of Ceuta in Spain. Lighthouses like this one help ships find their way safely at sea.
History of the Lighthouse
The Punta Almina Lighthouse was designed by an architect named Juan Martínez de la Villa. He created the plans for it in 1851. Building the lighthouse cost 462,000 reales, which was a type of money used in Spain a long time ago.
Part of the money for the lighthouse came from a royal couple, the Dukes of Montpensier. They were Infanta Luisa Fernanda and Antoine d'Orléans. They helped fund the project, and the lighthouse officially opened on December 1, 1855.
The lighthouse building is made of strong stone and brick, known as masonry. It has a tall, white, round tower. Inside, the light system was made by a company called Henry Lepaute. This special light system is still working today.
The light source of the lighthouse is very high up, about 145 meters (or 148 meters according to the infobox) above the sea. This high position allows its light to be seen from far away. The light can reach about 22 nautical miles, which is a unit used to measure distance at sea.
