A Look Back in Time
Long ago, before Europeans arrived, the area around Punta Maroma was home to the Maya people. They lived there for many years.
When Europeans came in the 1500s, things changed. Many native people became sick from diseases like smallpox, which the Spanish brought. After this, the Spanish took control of the area.
The Beach Through the Years
For a long time, even until the 1970s, most of the land around Punta Maroma was untouched. There was a large coconut farm west of the beach. A thick jungle stood between the main highway and the beach itself. Because of this, the only way to reach the beach was by boat.
Today, the actual Punta Maroma beach is still mostly natural. You won't find big resorts or hotels built right on this specific strip of sand. However, there are some resorts that use the name Maroma. These hotels are not on the original private Punta Maroma beach. They are located a short distance away from it.
