Punta Xicalango facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Punta Xicalango is a sandy point of land in Campeche, Mexico. It sticks out from the Yucatán Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico. This point shows where the coastline of the peninsula changes direction. It's about 5 kilometers (3 miles) northeast of Punta Zacatal. It sits near the western channel that links Laguna de Términos with the Gulf of Mexico, right across from Carmen Island.

A Look Back in Time

Punta Xicalango was once seen as the western edge of the land belonging to the ancient Maya civilization. This means it was a border with other old groups of people in Mesoamerica. Some records say it was a key place for trading goods. It was also a home for the Putún or Chontal Maya people.

How People Traveled Here

Before the Zacatal Bridge was built in 1994, people used ferries to travel. These ferries connected Carmen Island to the mainland. The ferries would arrive and depart from Punta Xicalango.
