The purple-bellied lory (scientific name: Lorius hypoinochrous) is a beautiful type of parrot. It belongs to the Psittaculidae family, which includes many colorful parrots. This bird lives only in Papua New Guinea and nearby islands.
You can find it in places like south-east New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and other islands such as the d'Entrecasteaux Islands and the Louisiade Archipelago. These lories love to live in warm, wet places. Their homes include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, mangrove forests near the coast, and even moist montane forests on mountainsides.
About the Purple-bellied Lory
The purple-bellied lory is about 26 cm (10 in) long. That's about the length of a ruler! This bird is mostly bright red. It has a black cap on its head and green wings.
Its belly is a pretty purple color, which gives the bird its name. Its upper legs (thighs) are also purple. The lory's lower legs are dark grey. Its tail is red with a dark green-blue tip.
The area above its beak, called the cere, is white. The rings around its eyes are grey. The colored part of its eyes, the iris, is a bright orange-red.
Different Types of Purple-bellied Lories
Within the purple-bellied lory species, there are three slightly different types. These are called subspecies. They look very similar but have small differences in their feather colors.
The three subspecies are:
- Lorius hypoinochrous devittatus
- Lorius hypoinochrous hypoinochrous
- Lorius hypoinochrous rosselianus
