Quartucciu (which is Cuartùcciu in the local Sardinian language) is a town in Sardinia, an island region of Italy. It's a comune, which is like a municipality or local government area. Quartucciu is part of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and is located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) northeast of Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia.
A Look Back: Quartucciu's History
People have lived in the area around Quartucciu since very, very old times. We know this from things they left behind from the prehistoric period.
A few decades before the Western Roman Empire ended, Quartucciu, like the rest of Sardinia, was taken over by the Vandals. These were a Germanic group who formed a kingdom in North Africa.
Later, in the Middle Ages, Quartucciu was part of the giudicato of Cagliari. A giudicato was a type of independent kingdom in Sardinia. After that, it was controlled by Pisa, a powerful city in Italy. Soon, the Kingdom of Aragon took over. Aragon was a kingdom in what is now Spain.
Until 1983, Quartucciu was actually a part of the larger city of Cagliari. But then, the people of Quartucciu voted in a special local election to become their own separate town. Two other towns, Elmas (in 1989) and Monserrato (in 1991), also separated from Cagliari around that time.
Exploring Quartucciu: Cool Places to See
Quartucciu is home to some amazing ancient sites. One of the biggest is a Giant's tomb called Sa Dom'è S'Orcu. This huge tomb was built between the 15th and 12th centuries BC. It's a fascinating look into how people lived and buried their dead long ago.
There's also an ancient burial ground, or necropolis, at the Pill'è Matta archaeological park. This site was used by both the Phoenicians and the Romans. It has more than 200 tombs and was used for a very long time, from the 4th century BC to the 5th century AD.
Other interesting places include the Nuraghe Arrù. A nuraghe is an ancient stone tower unique to Sardinia. This one dates from the 13th to 9th centuries BC. You can also visit the Church of St. George Martyr. This church was built by the Aragonese in the 14th century, on top of an older building from the time of Pisa. Inside, you can see a beautiful retablo, which is a large, decorated altarpiece from the 16th century.
