A Look at Monserrato's History
In the Middle Ages, Monserrato was a small village. It was known as Pauli, which means "marsh" in the Sardinian language. At that time, it was part of an old kingdom called the Giudicato of Cagliari.
Who Ruled Monserrato?
Over time, different groups ruled Monserrato. First, it was owned by the Republic of Pisa. Then, the Crown of Aragon (from Spain) took control. Later, it was part of another Sardinian kingdom called the Giudicato of Arborea.
In 1348, a terrible sickness called the plague hit the village. Many people died, and the village became almost empty. After that, it was ruled by the Spanish, and then by the Savoyard family, who later became the kings of Italy.
Becoming an Independent Town
Monserrato was its own independent town, or comune, for a long time. But in 1928, it became part of the larger city of Cagliari. It stayed a district of Cagliari until 1991.
In 1991, the people of Monserrato voted in a special local referendum. They decided they wanted their town to be separate from Cagliari again. So, Monserrato became an independent comune once more. Since 1995, it has been part of the new Cagliari metropolitan area.
Where is Monserrato?
Monserrato is located very close to several other towns. It shares borders with Cagliari, Quartu Sant'Elena, Quartucciu, Selargius, and Sestu. This makes it an important part of the area around Cagliari.
What to See in Monserrato
One of the most important sights in Monserrato is the
beautiful Church of Sant'Ambrogio. This church has a special style called Gothic, which means it has tall arches and detailed decorations. It's a great example of old architecture in the town.
