A Look Back: History
Puerto Rico, where Quebrada Grande is located, became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened in 1898, when Spain gave Puerto Rico to the U.S. as part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory," which means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 955 people lived in the Quebrada Grande barrio at that time.
