The Nissan Arena is a cool sports center in Nathan, a suburb of Brisbane. It's also known as the Queensland State Netball Centre. This arena is a big place where different sports and events happen.

It has a large indoor stadium with 5,000 seats. This is the home court for the Queensland Firebirds, a professional netball team. From 2019 to 2024, the Brisbane Bullets basketball team also played their home games here.

The Nissan Arena is also the main office for Netball Queensland. It offers great training areas for both top-level and local netball teams in Queensland.

What is Nissan Arena?

In July 2015, the Queensland Government shared exciting plans. They wanted to build a special home just for netball in the state. This new center would be for the professional netball team, the Queensland Firebirds. It would also have offices for Netball Queensland. Plus, it would offer facilities for new and growing netball clubs.

During its construction, people sometimes called it the Brisbane Arena. The company Hansen Yuncken was chosen to design and build it. Construction started in 2017. The center officially opened on February 24, 2019. It cost about $44 million to build.

Cool Features of the Arena

The Nissan Arena has many awesome features:

  • A main court with 5,000 seats, perfect for big games and TV broadcasts.
  • Eight other indoor hard courts for practice and smaller games.
  • A cafe and places to buy food and drinks.
  • Changing rooms for both community players and professional athletes.
  • A gym for players to train.
  • Special facilities for sports science and medicine to help elite athletes.
  • Offices for Netball Queensland and plenty of parking.

Who Plays Here?

Netball Teams

The Nissan Arena is the main base for Netball Queensland. It's also where the Queensland Firebirds play all their home games. During the 2020 netball season, many other Super Netball teams used the arena. They had to move their games here because of the pandemic.

Basketball Teams

The Brisbane Bullets, a team from the NBL, moved their home games to the arena in July 2019. This meant they could train and play in one place. Before this, they used different arenas. The Bullets even gave the arena a nickname for their home games: The Armoury.

In 2019, the arena also hosted a fun show by the Harlem Globetrotters. The Bullets moved back to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in 2024.

Other Events

The Nissan Arena has hosted many different events. Professional boxing matches have taken place here. Netball Queensland wants to bring even more indoor sports and entertainment to the venue.

In 2019, the arena hosted the Brisbane part of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League. It has also been used for local indoor volleyball games. The arena was also the site for basketball and the closing ceremony of the 2019 INAS Global Games.

How it Got its Name

When the center was being built and for its first year, it was called the Queensland State Netball Centre. In October 2019, a Japanese car company called Nissan bought the rights to name the arena. That's when it officially became the Nissan Arena. This naming deal was for three years.
