The Nissan Arena is a cool sports building in Nathan, a suburb of Brisbane. It's a big place where many different sports and events happen. The arena has 5,000 seats, making it a great spot to watch games.

This arena is the home court for two major sports teams. The Queensland Firebirds, a professional netball team, play their home games here. The Brisbane Bullets, a professional basketball team, also call this arena their home. It's also the main office for Netball Queensland. Plus, it offers training areas for netball players of all skill levels in Queensland.

About the Arena

In July 2015, the Queensland Government shared exciting news. They planned to build a special home just for netball in the state. This new building would be perfect for the Queensland Firebirds netball team. It would also have offices for Netball Queensland. The center would also provide great facilities for new and existing netball clubs.

During its construction, the building was sometimes called Brisbane Arena. A company called Hansen Yuncken was chosen to design and build it. Work on the center began in 2017.

Cool Features of the Arena

The Nissan Arena has many awesome features. These make it a top place for sports and events:

  • A main court with 5,000 seats for big games. These games can even be shown on TV!
  • Eight indoor hard courts for different sports and training.
  • A cafe and places to buy food and drinks.
  • Changing rooms for both professional and community athletes and umpires.
  • A gym for players to train and stay fit.
  • Special facilities for sports science and medicine. These help elite athletes perform their best.
  • Offices for Netball Queensland and plenty of parking.

The Nissan Arena officially opened its doors on February 24, 2019. The total cost to build this amazing facility was $44 million.

Who Plays Here?

The Nissan Arena is a busy place, hosting games for different sports teams.

Netball Teams

This arena is the main base for Netball Queensland. It's also the home court for the Queensland Firebirds. They are a top team in the Suncorp Super Netball league. All their home games are played right here.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the arena became a training hub. Many other Super Netball teams used it. They had to move their games and training here because of the pandemic.

Basketball Teams

The Brisbane Bullets are a professional basketball team. They play in the National Basketball League. In July 2019, they announced that all their home games would move to the Nissan Arena. This was a big change for them.

Now, the Bullets can train and play in the same building. Before, they had to use different places. This new setup makes things much easier for the team. The Bullets even have a special nickname for the arena during their home games: The Armoury. In 2019, the arena also hosted a fun exhibition game by the Harlem Globetrotters.

Other Events

The Nissan Arena isn't just for netball and basketball. Netball Queensland wants to bring many other indoor sports and entertainment events here. For example, the arena hosted a part of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League. This was a big international volleyball competition.

The arena has also hosted local indoor volleyball matches. It was also the place for basketball games and the closing ceremony of the 2019 INAS Global Games. These games are a major international sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Why the Name Nissan Arena?

When the arena was being built, and for its first year, it was called the Queensland State Netball Centre. But in October 2019, a big change happened. The Japanese car company Nissan bought the rights to name the arena.

So, the center was officially renamed the Nissan Arena. This naming deal is set to last for three years.
