Queimada (drink) facts for kids
Queimada is a special traditional punch from Galicia, a region in Spain. It's made from a type of brandy called aguardente (also known as orujo in Galicia). This punch is flavored with sugar, lemon peel, coffee beans, and cinnamon. Sometimes, special herbs or coffee are added too.
Traditionally, Queimada is prepared in a hollow pumpkin or a special clay pot. While it's being made, people often say a spell or special words. This is believed to give the Queimada and those who drink it special powers. After the spell, the punch is set on fire, creating a beautiful blue flame. More brandy is slowly added as it burns.
Where Queimada Comes From
Queimada has very old roots in Galicia. Its origins go back to the Celtic people and their ancient festivals. Many believe it's a tradition passed down from the old Celtic druids. Druids were like priests or wise people in ancient Celtic cultures. This special drink has been part of Galician culture for many generations.
The Queimada Tradition
The main reason for the Queimada ritual is to keep away bad spirits. According to tradition, these spirits might try to cause trouble for people. Queimada is a great drink for any gathering. It's perfect for parties, family get-togethers, or just hanging out with friends.
It's often prepared after dinner, when it's dark outside. This makes the experience even more special. People gather around the pot where the Queimada is being made. They enjoy the warmth and the blue flames. This helps everyone feel closer and become better friends.
One person usually finishes making the Queimada. They hold up a ladle with the burning liquid. While slowly pouring it back into the pot, they recite the special spell.
The tradition also says that one of the best times to make the conxuro da queimada (the 'spell of queimada') is during Samhain. Samhain is the Celtic New Year's Eve. However, the Queimada ritual is also very popular during St. John's Night. This night, also called 'witches' night', happens on June 23rd.
