The Quercus laurina is a type of oak tree. It is also known as the laurel oak. This tree is mostly found in Mexico. You can see it growing from Tamaulipas in the north to Chiapas in the south. It also grows in countries like Guatemala and El Salvador.
What is Quercus laurina?
This oak is a tall tree. It can grow up to 30 meters (about 98 feet) high. Its trunk can be very wide. Some trunks are 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) across. The leaves of the Quercus laurina are special. They are thick and feel like leather. Each leaf can be up to 15.5 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. They are shaped like an oval. Sometimes, they have a few big teeth near the tip.
Where does it grow?
Quercus laurina likes to grow in certain places. It is often found in cloud forests in Mexico. These forests are usually high up in mountains. They are often covered in clouds or mist. This tree is part of the Flora of the Sierra Madre Oriental. It also grows in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca and Sierra Madre del Sur mountain ranges. You can find it in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt too. It is also seen in the Los Tuxtlas region.
How do these trees mix?
Sometimes, different types of oak trees can mix. This creates something called a hybrid. A hybrid is like a mix of two different species. Quercus laurina can form hybrids. It mixes with another oak tree called Quercus affinis. This means they can share traits.
