Quiévrain (pronounced kye-vran) is a small town in Belgium. It is located in a region called Wallonia. This area is part of the province of Hainaut.
As of January 1, 2006, about 6,559 people lived in Quiévrain. The town covers an area of 21.22 square kilometers. This means there are about 309 people living in each square kilometer.
The municipality of Quiévrain includes a few smaller areas. These are the districts of Audregnies, Baisieux, and Quiévrain itself.
Quiévrain is important because it sits right on the border. It is a crossing point on the old main railway line between Paris and Brussels. Because of this, Belgians sometimes jokingly call France outre-Quiévrain. This means "beyond Quiévrain." People in France might use the same phrase for Belgium.
During the final days of the First World War, Quiévrain was freed. Canadian soldiers helped liberate the town on November 7, 1918. This event marks the start of the Canadian Route of Remembrance in Belgium.
The Revolutions of 1848 and Quiévrain
In 1848, many countries in Europe experienced big changes. These were called the Revolutions of 1848. One of these happened in France. After the French king was overthrown, France became a republic.
Some Belgian workers were living in Paris at this time. They were encouraged to go back to Belgium. Their goal was to overthrow the Belgian king and create a republic there too.
About 6,000 of these Belgians formed a group. It was called the "Belgian Legion." They were given weapons by some officials in the French city of Lille. The legion planned to enter Belgium. They wanted to "raise the people" and remove the Belgian monarchy. It is thought that the new French government supported these revolutionaries.
The first group of the Belgian Legion traveled by train. They were stopped at Quiévrain on March 26, 1848. The Belgian authorities quickly disarmed them. This meant their plan to start a revolution in Belgium through Quiévrain failed. Another group tried to cross elsewhere and was also defeated.
