Discovering Quindalup's History

Early Timber Industry

Quindalup was once a very important place for the timber industry in Western Australia. In the 1860s, several timber mills were built here. These mills processed wood from the forests. To export the timber, a long pier, called a jetty, was built on the coast. This jetty allowed ships to load the timber and take it to other places.

The name "Quindalup" was first used for a timber mill owned by Henry Yelverton and McGibbon.

How Quindalup Became a Town

In the 1870s, the government set aside land in the Quindalup area. Later, in 1899, local fishermen asked for a town to be officially created along the beach. That same year, the land was measured out into lots. Quindalup was officially declared a town in 1899.

The town was built near a shallow inlet. This is where the jetty was located. A special tramway was used to bring timber from the mills to the jetty. From there, smaller boats would carry the timber to larger ships anchored a few kilometers offshore.

What Does "Quindalup" Mean?

The name "Quindalup" comes from the Aboriginal language. It means "place of the Quenda". A Quenda is a small, native Australian animal that looks a bit like a bandicoot.

Harwoods Cottage: A Glimpse into the Past

Today, only a few parts of the original settlement remain. One important historical site is a group of buildings known as Harwoods Cottage. This slab cottage was built around 1860. It was connected to the first timber mill in the area.

The Harwoods Cottage group includes several old buildings. These are a cottage, a small jail, a post office, a telephone exchange, and a Customs House. For many years, these buildings were almost falling apart. However, plans for their restoration began in 1998. The restoration work started in 2000, and the site opened for visitors that same year. Accommodation for guests became available in 2004.
