Río Cañas Abajo is a special neighborhood, called a barrio, located in the town of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 2,848 people lived there.
A Look at History
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,066 people lived in the Río Cañas Abajo barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Río Cañas Abajo has changed:

Impact of Hurricane Maria
On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico very hard. Like many other places on the island, Río Cañas Abajo faced tough times. The hurricane caused a lot of damage to buildings and roads. Many people were left without electricity for several months.
