Río Grande is a small area, called a barrio, in the town of Morovis, Puerto Rico. It's home to 594 people, based on the 2010 census. This barrio is divided into six smaller parts, known as sectors.
A Look Back at Río Grande
Puerto Rico used to be part of Spain. After the Spanish–American War, in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 841 people lived in Río Grande barrio at that time.
Río Grande faced a big challenge when Hurricane Maria hit on September 20, 2017. The Río Grande River overflowed its banks. This caused a lot of flooding. Many homes were damaged or destroyed. The water even reached two feet below La Playita restaurant, which is built on stilts. The people in the community were cut off from others and lost electricity.
Exploring Río Grande's Sectors
Barrios are like small neighborhoods or divisions within a town. These barrios are then split into even smaller local areas. These smaller parts are called sectores (which means sectors in English).
Sectors can have different names. Some are simply called "sector." Others might be known as "urbanización," "reparto," "barriada," or "residencial."
Here are the sectors you can find in Río Grande barrio:
- Sector Delgado
- Sector El Cerro
- Sector Fontán
- Sector La Playita
- Sector Los Quendo
- Tramo Carretera 155
