A Look at History
Becoming Part of the United States
Long ago, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 1,248 people lived in the Río Jueyes barrio at that time.
