Raosaheb Ramrao Patil, known to many as R. R. Patil or "Aaba", was an important Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He was born on August 16, 1957, and passed away on February 16, 2015. For many years, from 1991 to 2015, he served as a MLA for the Tasgaon area. He was a key leader in modern Maharashtra and a member of the Nationalist Congress Party. He held significant positions, including Home Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Growing Up: R. R. Patil's Early Life
R. R. Patil, affectionately called "Aaba" (which means 'father' or 'elder brother' in Marathi), was born in the village of Anjani. This village is located in the Tasgaon area of Sangli district in Maharashtra. Even though his father was the village head, his family did not have much money.
He managed to complete most of his education through a government program called "Earn & Learn". This program helped students work and study at the same time. He earned two degrees, a B.A. and a LL.B., from Shantiniketan College in Sangli.
A Life in Politics: R. R. Patil's Career
R. R. Patil started his political journey in 1979. He was a member of the Sangli Zillah Parishad, which is a local district council, until 1990. After that, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990. He continued to be re-elected from the Tasgaon area in Sangli district in 1995, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.
In the assembly, he became the Chief Whip of the Congress Party. This role means he was responsible for making sure party members voted together. He also chaired the public accounts committee, which checks how the government spends money, in 1996-97 and 1998-99.
After the 1999 elections, he became the Rural Development Minister for Maharashtra. This role focused on improving life in villages. On December 25, 2003, he became the Home Minister of Maharashtra. This is a very important job, overseeing law and order. He also took special interest in the Gadchiroli district, which faced challenges from certain groups. He worked to encourage local people to support the government by doing development work for them.
On November 1, 2004, he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He also led the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra. People in Maharashtra respected him greatly and called him 'Mr Clean'. This was because of his honest image and his efforts to promote cleanliness. He started initiatives like "Gadage Baba Swachata Abhiyan" (a cleanliness campaign) and "Tantamukt Gaon" (a program to make villages free of disputes).
His Final Days and Legacy
R. R. Patil sadly passed away at Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre on February 16, 2015. He had been battling oral cancer for a long time. Although he showed signs of getting better for a while, he eventually succumbed to the illness.
His last rites, or funeral ceremony, were held with full state honours. This included a special 21-gun salute by the Maharashtra government. The funeral took place in his home village of Anjani in the Tasgaon area of Sangli district on February 17, 2015. Many important people attended, including the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, along with Anna Hazare, Sharad Pawar, and other political leaders from different parties. R. R. Patil is remembered for his dedication to public service and his clean image in politics.
