RE/MAX Field is a popular baseball stadium located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It has been known by a few names over the years, including Edmonton Ballpark and Telus Field. This stadium has been home to many different baseball teams.

Today, RE/MAX Field is the home of the Edmonton Riverhawks. They are a team in the West Coast League, a league for college baseball players. The stadium is nestled in the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley. You can find it in the Rossdale neighborhood of Edmonton.

Discovering RE/MAX Field's History

RE/MAX Field opened its doors in 1995. It was built on the same spot where an older stadium, John Ducey Park, once stood. That old park had been there for 60 years!

How the Stadium Got Its Names

Telus Field

When the stadium first opened, it was called Telus Field. A company named Telus Communications bought the rights to use their name for the stadium. This deal lasted for 14 years.

After the naming rights deal ended in 2009, the stadium kept the name Telus Field for a while. Then, in 2016, it was simply called Edmonton Ballpark. In May 2017, the stadium got its current name, RE/MAX Field. This happened because the Edmonton Prospects team, who played there at the time, made a deal with their sponsor, RE/MAX.

Special Features of the Field

The stadium has tall walls around the field. Most of the walls are about 12 feet (3.7 meters) high. But in center field, there's a huge green wall that is 34 feet (10 meters) tall! This "green monster" is one of the tallest walls in professional baseball. A few players have even hit home runs over it.

RE/MAX Field has also hosted big international baseball events. In 2004, it held the IBAF World Cup for Women's baseball. In 2008, it hosted the IBAF AAA World Junior Championships for young baseball players.

New Management and Teams

In May 2020, a group called Baseball Edmonton Inc. made a deal with the city. They agreed to manage the stadium for ten years. This group, led by former Edmonton Oilers player Randy Gregg, wanted to use the field more often. They hoped to bring in more baseball teams and even host cultural events.

After some discussions, Baseball Edmonton Inc. decided to create a new team. This team, the Edmonton Riverhawks, joined the West Coast League. They started playing at RE/MAX Field in the 2022 season. The Edmonton Prospects, who used to play there, moved to a new stadium called Myshak Metro Ballpark in 2025.

Exploring RE/MAX Field's Design

RE/MAX Field is designed to be a great place for baseball and other events. It has a mix of natural grass and special artificial turf.

Field Surface Details

The outfield of RE/MAX Field has natural grass. However, the infield uses FieldTurf, which is a type of artificial grass. When the stadium first opened, the infield had AstroTurf. This was changed to FieldTurf in 2005 and again in 2021.

Artificial turf is a good choice for the infield because it's easier to take care of. It also has a better drainage system. This means the field can be ready to play again quickly after it rains. It also helps protect the infield when concerts or other events are held there.

Seating and Amenities

The stadium can hold up to 9,200 people. It has special luxury suites at ground level. Above these, there are regular seats and general seating areas.

There's also a special area called the Home Plate VIP Lounge. It's right behind home plate and has a bar and a restaurant. You can watch the game from inside or outside the lounge. This lounge also displays trophies and pictures from Edmonton's early baseball teams.

Field Dimensions

The distances to the outfield walls are:

  • Left field: 340 feet (104 meters)
  • Left-center field: 378 feet (115 meters)
  • Center field: 420 feet (128 meters)
  • Right-center field: 395 feet (120 meters)
  • Right field: 320 feet (98 meters)

Honoring Baseball History

As you walk around the stadium, you'll see pictures of important moments from the Edmonton Trappers team. These include photos from their championship wins and trophies. It's a great way to learn about the history of baseball in Edmonton.
