RE/MAX Field is a cool baseball stadium located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It's a special place where many baseball teams have played over the years. Some of the teams that called it home include the Edmonton Trappers and the Edmonton Capitals.
Today, RE/MAX Field is the home of the Edmonton Riverhawks. They are part of the West Coast League, which is a league for college baseball players. The stadium is found in the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley, in a neighborhood called Rossdale.
The Story of RE/MAX Field
RE/MAX Field first opened its doors in 1995. It was built on the same spot where an older baseball park, John Ducey Park, used to be. When it first opened, the stadium was known as Telus Field. This name came from a company called Telus, which bought the "naming rights" in 1995. Naming rights mean a company pays money to have a building or event named after them.
The stadium has some interesting features for baseball fans. The walls around the field are about 12 feet (3.7 meters) high. But in the center field, there's a huge green wall that is 34 feet (10 meters) tall! This wall is one of the tallest in professional baseball. Only a few players have ever hit a home run over it, like Matthew LeCroy, Michael Cuddyer, and Todd Sears.
RE/MAX Field has also hosted big international baseball events. In 2004, it held the IBAF World Cup for Women's baseball. Then, in 2008, it hosted the IBAF AAA World Junior Championships. This was the seventh time the park hosted this important junior championship.
The stadium kept the name Telus Field even after the original naming rights deal ended in 2009. In 2016, it was briefly called Edmonton Ballpark. That year, the Fort McMurray Giants baseball team played their first season there because they had to leave their home due to the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. In May 2017, the stadium got its current name, RE/MAX Field. This happened because the Edmonton Prospects team made a deal with their sponsor, RE/MAX, to name the park after them for three years.
In 2020, a group led by former Edmonton Oilers hockey player Randy Gregg made a deal with the city of Edmonton. His group, Baseball Edmonton Inc., will lease the stadium for ten years. They hope to use the field more often throughout the year. This could include hosting minor baseball leagues and working with music groups. They even have plans for an indoor area under the left field seats so the stadium can be used in winter too!
The Edmonton Riverhawks became the main team at RE/MAX Field starting in the 2021 season.
What Makes RE/MAX Field Special?
RE/MAX Field has a mix of natural grass and artificial turf. The outfield has real grass, but the infield uses a special artificial turf called FieldTurf. Before 2005, it used a different type of turf called AstroTurf. Artificial turf is used because it's easier to take care of and helps the field drain water quickly. This means games can start again faster after it rains. It also protects the field when concerts are held there.
The stadium can hold up to 9,200 people, so it's a big place! It has special "luxury suites" at ground level. These are fancy rooms where groups can watch the game. Above them are regular seats for everyone else. There's also a "Home Plate VIP Lounge" right behind home plate. It's a cool spot with a bar and restaurant where you can eat and watch the game at the same time. This lounge also has trophies and old pictures from Edmonton's baseball history.
The field itself has different distances to the walls:
- Left field: 340 feet (104 meters)
- Left center: 378 feet (115 meters)
- Center field: 420 feet (128 meters)
- Right center: 395 feet (120 meters)
- Right field: 320 feet (98 meters)
As you walk around the stadium, you'll see pictures of famous moments from the Edmonton Trappers' history. These include pictures of every time the Trappers won a championship and trophies they earned.
Fun Events and Concerts
Besides baseball, RE/MAX Field has also hosted many concerts and other events over the years. It's a great place for big outdoor shows!
