RMIT Building 11 is also known as the RMIT Spiritual Centre. It is a special building at the City campus of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. This centre is a calm place where students can go to practice mindful meditation. The RMIT Chaplaincy Service helps organize these activities.

A Look at Its Past

This building was constructed in 1860. It was originally the chapel for the Old Melbourne Gaol. It was part of the "North Wing" of the gaol. Today, it is one of the few parts of the old prison that still exist.

The building became part of RMIT University in 1929. This happened after the gaol was no longer used as a prison. Other parts of the old gaol that are still around include the main entrance gates and the governor's house. There was also a hospital for women, a service area, and a bathhouse. These, along with the chapel, are now known as "RMIT Building 11."

Another part of the old gaol, called the "East Block," is now used as a museum. Some other parts of the gaol were taken down over time. This made space for new buildings for RMIT University.

Why This Building Is Important

RMIT Building 11 is a very important building in Melbourne. The Melbourne City Council calls it a "notable building." This means it has special historical or architectural value.

It is also listed by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). It is on the Victorian Heritage Register. These groups work to protect important places. This shows how much history the building holds.
