Raşit Öwezgeldiýewiç Meredow (born May 29, 1960) is an important politician and diplomat from Turkmenistan. He has served as the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2001. He also held the role of Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers since 2007. In this role, he worked with Presidents Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and his son, Serdar Berdimuhamedow.

Early Life and Education

Raşit Meredow was born in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on May 29, 1960. His father, Öwezgeldi, was a scientist and lawyer. His mother is from the Azerbaijani ethnic group.
Meredow studied law at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He graduated in 1982. From 1982 to 1984, he taught law at Gorky Turkmen State University. In 1987, he finished his advanced studies at Moscow State University. He earned a degree in legal sciences.
Political Career
Meredow began his career in government in the early 1990s.
Early Roles
- From 1990 to 1991, he was a chief consultant at Turkmenistan's Ministry of Justice.
- From 1991 to 1993, he led the Law Enforcement Department under the President of Turkmenistan.
- From 1993 to 1994, he was the head of the Legal Department in the President's Office.
Parliament and Institutes
In 1994, Meredow was elected to the parliament of Turkmenistan. From 1996 to 1999, he worked as a deputy director at the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights. This institute was a key government organization. During this time, in 1996, he also took short courses at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Key Government Positions
- In May 1999, he became the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
- In December 1999, he was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan (the parliament).
- In May 2001, he was elected as the Chairman of the Assembly of Turkmenistan.
- In July 2001, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He has held this important role ever since.
- Starting in August 2001, he also directed the Turkmen National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights.
- From 2003 to 2005, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan. The President of Turkmenistan holds the top position as Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Foreign Minister Role
Since July 2001, Raşit Meredow has been Turkmenistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs. From February 2003, he also served as Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.
In March 2005, President Saparmurat Niyazov removed Meredow from his Deputy Prime Minister role for a short time. After President Niyazov passed away, Meredow returned to the post of Deputy Prime Minister. In February 2017, he was reappointed to this position after the new president was elected. He also became the chairman of the ruling Democratic Party in April 2017. He continued to hold his positions under the current President, Serdar Berdimuhamedow.
