Serdar Gurbangulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow (born 22 September 1981) is a politician from Turkmenistan. He is the third and current President of Turkmenistan, a role he has held since 19 March 2022.
Before becoming president, Berdimuhamedow held several important jobs in the government. His father, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, was the previous president for many years. In 2022, Serdar won the country's presidential election. This made Turkmenistan the first country in Central Asia where a son followed his father as president.

Early Life and Education
Serdar Berdimuhamedow was born in Ashgabat, which was then part of the Soviet Union, on 22 September 1981. He went to school in Ashgabat from 1987 to 1997.
After school, he studied at the Turkmen Agricultural University from 1997 to 2001. He graduated with a degree in engineering.
From 2008 to 2011, he studied international relations at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During this time, he also worked at the Turkmen Embassy in Moscow. Later, from 2011 to 2013, he studied European and international security in Geneva. He also worked at the Turkmen Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.
In 2014 and 2015, he earned advanced degrees from the Turkmen Academy of Sciences. State media in Turkmenistan often called him "the son of the nation."
Military Service
Serdar Berdimuhamedow completed two years of required military service from 2001 to 2003. In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. This promotion was even shown on national television.
In 2021, he was seen in uniform with the shoulder patch of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan. He was also given the honorary title of "Defender of Homeland Turkmenistan." In 2023, he was promoted to the highest military rank, general of the army.
Political Journey
In November 2016, Berdimuhamedow was elected to the Assembly of Turkmenistan, which is like the country's parliament. He was re-elected in 2018. He also led a committee focused on laws.
He became more well-known in politics when he was made deputy minister of foreign affairs in March 2018. In 2019, he became the deputy governor of Ahal Province, then later the governor. In 2020, he was appointed minister of industry.
In February 2021, he was promoted to deputy chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. This new role focused on innovation and digital technology. He also joined the State Security Council and led the Supreme Control Chamber. Later that year, he took on responsibilities for economic and financial matters.
He is also the head of the Turkmen Alabay Dog Association. And he is president of the International Ahal Teke Horse Breeding Association.
Presidency (2022–present)

Becoming President
In February 2022, it was announced that Serdar Berdimuhamedow would run in an early presidential election. This led to many people thinking he would become the next president after his father. He won the election on 12 March with 72.97% of the votes. Some international observers had questions about how free and fair the election was.
Inauguration Day
Serdar Berdimuhamedow officially became president on 19 March at the Ruhyýet Palace. He took an oath to the people using the Constitution of Turkmenistan and the Quran. He then received the presidential badge. After the ceremony, he rode in a motorcade to the Oguzhan Presidential Palace. There, the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan held a military parade.
Government and Foreign Relations
Soon after becoming president, he kept most of his father's ministers in their jobs. He made some changes, like appointing Muhammetguly Muhammedow to his former role in economics and finance.

On his first day as president, Turkmenistan became the first Central Asian country to accept diplomats from the Taliban government of Afghanistan. Former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind visited Turkmenistan in April, which was the first visit by an Indian president to the country. They talked about increasing trade and energy cooperation. President Berdimuhamedow's first foreign trip was to Saudi Arabia in June. He also visited Russia and Iran that month.

Personal Life
Serdar Berdimuhamedow is married and has four children. People who knew him from his studies described him as calm, modest, and polite.
He speaks Turkmen, Russian, and English.
In May 2022, his mother, Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedowa, was given the title of Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan. In June 2022, Serdar and his son performed Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
In January 2023, a law was signed that gave his father, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, and his family legal protection and other benefits.
