Early Life and Interests
Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh was born in a village called Jigna, which is in the Gonda district. He was the 12th king of Gonda. He took over from the 11th king, Raja Guman Singh.
From a young age, he loved being active. He was very interested in things like horse riding, swimming, and a type of wrestling called malla-yuddha.
Role in the 1857 Revolt
The year 1857 was a very important time in Indian history. There was a big uprising against British rule. On July 5, 1857, a powerful leader named Begum Hazrat Mahal sent a letter to Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh. She asked him for help during the revolution in the Avadh region. Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh showed great bravery during this time. He also worked to bring people together, encouraging friendship between Hindus and Muslims.
Later Life and Passing
After the revolt, Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh moved to a place called Devkhur in Nepal. He passed away there in 1866. His death was caused by a serious illness called Malaria.
A Library in His Name
To honor Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh, a special library was opened. It is called the Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh Library. This library was started on May 25, 1974, by the Nagar Palika Gonda, which is like the local city council. You can find this library in Gonda, right in front of a pond called Sagar Talab. It helps children and others learn and read.
