The History of Raleigh

Raleigh is located in what is now Grant County. However, it was originally part of Morton County.

Raleigh was first created as a "coaling stop." This means it was a place where trains could stop to refuel with coal. It was part of a branch line of the Milwaukee Road. This train line branched off from the main railroad in McLaughlin, South Dakota. It then ran all the way to New England, North Dakota.

The community of Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh. Many of the first settlers in Raleigh were German Russians. These families had previously settled near Strasburg in Emmons County.
