Who Was Sir Ralph Bingley?
Sir Ralph Bingley was a Welsh soldier who played a role in Irish history during the late 1500s and early 1600s. He was known for his military service and for helping to establish new settlements in Ireland.
Early Life and Military Service
Ralph Bingley was born in a place called Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales, around the year 1570. He became a soldier and served as an officer under another important leader, Sir Henry Docwra.
Bingley was part of a group sent to Ireland to set up military bases, called garrisons. These bases were in areas like Derry and Lough Foyle. This was during a time known as Tyrone's Rebellion (1594–1603). This rebellion was a big conflict where Irish leaders fought against English rule.
After a key area was captured, Bingley was put in charge of a place called Rathmullan.
Settling in Ireland
Because of his good service as a soldier, Sir Ralph Bingley was rewarded. In 1602, the English Crown (which means the King or Queen of England) gave him land near Rathmullan.
Later, during a time called the Plantation of Ulster, he received even more land. This "Plantation" was a plan to settle people from England and Scotland in Ulster, a province in northern Ireland. Bingley was given 1,100 acres of land in Kilmacrennan, which included the town of Rathmullan.
His brother, Richard Bingley, was also a soldier in Ireland and became a landowner during this time. Because of the Bingley brothers, northern County Donegal became a place where many Welsh people settled.
Later Years and Death
In 1608, another conflict happened called O'Doherty's Rebellion. During this time, the city of Derry was burned. Sir Ralph Bingley returned to active duty with the Irish Army to help.
Years later, in 1624, he was chosen to be the Mayor of Derry. This was an important leadership role in the city.
Sir Ralph Bingley was a strong supporter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, a powerful figure in England. Bingley led a group of Irish soldiers to fight alongside the Duke's forces. They were involved in a major battle known as the Siege of La Rochelle in France. Sadly, Sir Ralph Bingley was killed during a part of this battle called the Pont du Feneau in 1627.
