Ralph du Boulay Evans was an English cricket player and a geologist. He was born on October 1, 1891, and passed away on July 27, 1929. He played a type of cricket called first-class cricket.

Early Life and Education

Ralph was born in Newtown, Hampshire, England. His father, Alfred Evans, was also a cricketer. Ralph went to Winchester College, a famous school, where he played cricket for the school team.

After Winchester, he went to Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1910. He continued to play cricket while he was studying there.

Cricket Career Highlights

Ralph Evans played first-class cricket for a few teams. This is the highest level of cricket played in many countries.

Playing for Hampshire

In 1912, during his summer break from Cambridge, Ralph played one match for Hampshire. This game was against Essex at Leyton.

Playing for Cambridge University

The next year, in 1913, he played three matches for Cambridge University Cricket Club. In one of these games, he scored 70 runs. This was his highest score in first-class cricket.

Final Match

His last first-class match was in 1914. He played for a team called the Free Foresters against his old university team, Cambridge.

Ralph's Cricket Stats

In total, Ralph Evans played five first-class matches. He scored 102 runs, with an average of 34 runs per game. He also took 5 wickets (meaning he got 5 batters out) with his medium pace bowling. His best bowling figures were 3 wickets for 37 runs.

Life After Cricket

After finishing his studies at Cambridge, Ralph became a geologist. Geologists study the Earth's rocks and history. He worked for the British Geological Survey (BGS).

World War I Service

The First World War started shortly after he joined the BGS. In November 1914, Ralph joined the army as a second lieutenant. He was part of the 3rd Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

During the war, he became a prisoner of war. He was sent to Switzerland as part of an agreement. This agreement, arranged by the Red Cross, allowed prisoners to stay in neutral Switzerland.

While in Switzerland, Ralph was active. He was the chairman of the British Interned Mürren Ski Club. He also helped edit a magazine called British Interned Magazine.

Post-War Life and Passing

After the war, Ralph returned to England. In 1919, he became a fellow of the Geological Society of London. This is a special honor for geologists.

Sadly, Ralph Evans passed away in a car accident in the United States. This happened in Wheeler Ridge, California, on July 27, 1929.

Family Connections

Ralph wasn't the only cricketer in his family. His brother, John, also played first-class cricket. Three of his cousins were also first-class cricketers.
