Ramón Fernando Núñez Reyes (born November 14, 1985) is a former professional footballer. He mostly played as an attacking midfielder. He could also play as a winger or a second striker. In his home country, Honduras, people called him El Principito, which means The Little Prince.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out in Soccer

Ramón Núñez was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He grew up in the United States. He moved there with his family in the early 1990s. He finished high school in Dallas, Texas. In 2004, he was chosen by the Dallas Burn team. This was after playing one season of college soccer. He was named the best new player in his college conference.

In his first year with the Dallas Burn (which became FC Dallas), Ramón didn't play much. But in his second year, he played a lot more. He scored five goals and helped with three others. Later, he moved to Chivas USA in 2007. After that season, he left the team.

Playing in Honduras and Mexico

Ramón then joined Olimpia in Honduras. He played 34 games and scored three goals. He was a very important player for Olimpia. He helped them win the 2007/08 Clausura championship. He was even named the player of the season!

His great playing led him to a loan move to Puebla in Mexico. He scored his first goal for Puebla in February 2009. He ended up scoring five goals and helping with five assists. After Puebla, he moved to Cruz Azul for six months. He scored two goals in the CONCACAF Champions League. He then decided to go back to Honduras. He wanted to play regularly to make sure he was chosen for the 2010 World Cup team.

He rejoined C.D. Olimpia in Honduras. He scored five goals in 11 games. After his contract ended, he wanted to play in Europe. He turned down offers from Mexican teams.

Time in England with Leeds United

In August 2010, Ramón went to England to try out for Leeds United. He played well in a friendly game. The manager, Simon Grayson, was impressed. Ramón signed a contract with Leeds United until January 2011.

He made his first team debut for Leeds in September 2010. He came on as a substitute against Cardiff City. In January 2011, he signed a new contract with Leeds. He played well for the reserve team. Leeds decided to keep him for another year.

Loan to Scunthorpe United

In March 2011, Ramón joined Scunthorpe United on loan. This was to get more playing experience. He scored his first goal for Scunthorpe in April 2011. His loan was extended until the end of the season. He scored three goals during his time there.

Back at Leeds

After his loan, Ramón signed a new contract with Leeds in May 2011. He played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for Honduras. He scored his first goals for Leeds in a League Cup match. He scored two goals against Bradford City. He also scored his first league goal for Leeds against Hull City.

In October 2011, Ramón signed a new four-year deal with Leeds. However, he later suffered a serious knee injury in September 2012. This injury meant he would miss the whole season. His contract with Leeds ended in January 2013.

Later Career

In 2014, Ramón signed with Alajuelense in Costa Rica. He was released from the team in November due to not following team rules.

International Career Highlights

Ramón Núñez played for the Honduras U-20 team in 2005. He was first called up to the senior Honduras national football team in 2006. He made his debut in September 2007. In 2008, he played for the Honduras U-23 team in the Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing.

Ramón scored two important goals for Honduras against Canada in September 2008. He scored again four days later against Jamaica.

He was chosen for the Honduras team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played in all three of Honduras' games. Honduras did not make it past the group stage.

After joining Leeds, Ramón continued to play for Honduras. He helped Honduras win the 2011 Copa Centroamericana tournament. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. In June 2011, he played for Honduras in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played in five games as a substitute.
