Ram Island is a small island located off the coast of Mystic, Connecticut. It measures about 20-acre (81,000 m2) (which is about the size of 15 football fields). The island is part of the town of Stonington. It sits about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the shore, between Mystic and Fishers Island.
History of Ram Island
Ram Island has an interesting past. It was once known as Mystic Island. Long ago, it was home to a fancy hotel resort. This hotel was built during the Victorian era, a time when people enjoyed grand buildings.
The Famous Hotel
Steamships from big cities like Boston and New York City would stop at the hotel twice a day. This shows how popular the island was. At its busiest, the hotel even hosted a world championship boxing match.
Decline and Destruction
By the 1920s, the hotel started to fall apart. It was completely destroyed by the powerful New England Hurricane of 1938. After the hurricane, a new motel was built on the island. This motel served boaters who were just passing through.
Recent Years
Since 1978, Ram Island has been a private home and farm. People lived there seasonally, meaning only during certain times of the year. Sadly, fires in 2013 and 2014 destroyed the barn and the main house on the island.
