Raman Parimala (born November 21, 1948) is a famous mathematician from India. She is known for her important work in a field of math called algebra. She is currently a very important professor of mathematics at Emory University in the United States. Before that, she was a professor for many years at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, India.

Professor Parimala has also helped choose winners for major math awards. She was on the jury for the Infosys Prize in Mathematical Sciences from 2019 to 2022. She also served on the committee that selects the winner of the Abel Prize from 2021 to 2023. The Abel Prize is one of the highest honors a mathematician can receive.

Early Life and Education

Raman Parimala was born and grew up in Tamil Nadu, India. She went to Saradha Vidyalaya Girls' High School and Stella Maris College in Chennai.

She earned her master's degree (M.Sc.) from Madras University in 1970. Later, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Mumbai in 1976. Her teacher and guide for her Ph.D. was R. Sridharan from TIFR.

In 1987, she received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology. This is the highest award for science in India. She is also a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi. This means she is recognized as a top scientist in India.

Awards and Recognitions

Raman Parimala has received many honors for her amazing work in mathematics.

In 2020, on National Science Day in India, the government announced a special honor for her. They decided to create special teaching positions, called "chairs," at institutes across India. These chairs are named after Raman Parimala and ten other important Indian women scientists. This helps celebrate their achievements and inspire new generations.

Professor Parimala has also been invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians. This is a very big deal in the math world! She gave a talk in Zurich in 1994 about Study of quadratic forms — some connections with geometry. She also gave a main speech at the Congress in Hyderabad in 2010.

Here are some of her other important honors:

  • She is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
  • She is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy.
  • She won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1987.
  • She became an Honorary Member of the London Mathematical Society in 2024.
  • She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne in 1999. An honorary doctorate is a special degree given to someone to recognize their great achievements, even if they didn't study there.
  • She received the Srinivasa Ramanujan Birth Centenary Award in 2003.
  • She won the TWAS Prize for Mathematics in 2005.
  • She became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2012.
