Rambhau Mhalgi (born Ramchandra Kashinath Mhalgi, 1921-1982) was an important Indian politician. He was a member of the Lok Sabha, which is like the main parliament of India. He worked with different political parties throughout his career.
Early Life and Education
Rambhau Mhalgi was born on July 9, 1921. His parents were Kashinathpant and Sarasvatibai. He was born in a place called Kadus in the Pune district of India.
He went to Sarasvati Mandir School in Pune. He finished school in 1939. Later, he studied law and earned degrees like LLB and MA. He also passed an exam to become a lawyer.
Rambhau Mhalgi was involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This is a large organization in India. He worked as a regional leader for the RSS from 1950 to 1954. He also helped run the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). This is a student group connected to the RSS. He even went to Kerala to work as a full-time volunteer, known as a pracharak, for the RSS.
Political Journey
Rambhau Mhalgi was part of several political parties. He was with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) until 1977. Then he joined the Janata Party from 1977 to 1980. Later, he became a leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In 1957, he ran for elections to the Bombay Legislative Assembly. This was a state-level assembly. He won from the Maval area. He became a leader for the opposition parties in the Bombay Legislature.
He was elected to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha in 1967 and 1972. The Vidhan Sabha is the state assembly for Maharashtra. He represented the Shukrawar Peth area of Pune. This area's seat in the assembly no longer exists.
During a time known as "the Emergency" in India, many political leaders were arrested. Rambhau Mhalgi was also arrested in 1976.
Later, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Thane in Maharashtra. He won in 1977 as a candidate for the Bharatiya Lok Dal party. He won again in 1980 as a candidate for the Janata Party. When the Jana Sangh group left the Janata Party to form the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rambhau Mhalgi became the first president of the BJP's Maharashtra state unit.
His Legacy
After Rambhau Mhalgi passed away, an organization was started in his memory. It is called the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP). It was set up in 1982 in Mumbai. This institute helps train leaders and does research on social and political topics.
To honor him, some places are named after him. There are secondary schools in Katraj and Kadus. Also, some roads in Thane and Pune are named after him.
Personal Life
Rambhau Mhalgi passed away on March 6, 1982. He was married to Vijaya. She lived until 2011 and passed away in Pune. They had a son named Jayant.
