Thane (Marathi: [ˈʈʰaːɳeː]) is a big city in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is located near Mumbai and is part of the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Thane is on the northeastern side of Salsette Island.
The city of Thane is located within Thane taluka, which is one of seven areas in Thane district. It is the main city and headquarters for the district. Thane is the 15th most populated city in India. In 2011, its population was about 1,890,000 people.

What's in a Name?
The old name for Thane was Śrīsthāna. In early Arab writings, it was called Thāna.
Over time, people spelled Thane in different ways. Some of these spellings were Tana, Thana, Thâṇâ, and Thame. Before 1996, the city was officially called "Thana". This was the British way of spelling the name. Later, the more local name "Thane" was adopted.
A Look Back in Time
In 1787, a special copper plate was found near Thane Fort. This plate, from the year 1078 AD, mentioned a city called "Sri Sthanaka". For a long time, Thane was an important place for the Maratha Empire. They used it to train soldiers and recruit new ones.
During the First Anglo-Maratha War, the East India Company took control of Thane Fort. However, Maratha forces quickly took it back. Thane remained under Maratha control until the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
Geography and Climate
Thane has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it gets a lot of rain, especially during the monsoon season. The weather is generally mild, without extreme hot or cold temperatures.
Temperatures in Thane usually range from 22°C to 36°C. In winter, nights can get as cool as 12°C. Summer days can be hot, going above 40°C. The coolest daytime temperatures are in July and August, around 25°C. Most of the yearly rainfall happens from June to October. Thane gets about 2000–2500mm of rain each year. The air is usually humid, with humidity levels from 61% to 86%.

In 2011, Thane had a population of about 1,886,941 people. Most people in Thane can read and write. The literacy rate was 91.36%. For males, it was 94.19%, and for females, it was 88.14%.
In Thane, there were 882 females for every 1000 males. Among children aged 0-6, there were 900 girls for every 1000 boys. Children make up about 10.24% of Thane's total population.
The main language spoken in Thane is Marathi. Many people also understand and speak Hindi. Some old families in Thane still speak Portuguese. About 1,800 Jewish people live in Thane.
In 2011, nearly half of Thane's population (48.50%) spoke Marathi. Hindi was spoken by 19.59% of people, and Urdu by 12.99%. Other languages like Gujarati, Bhojpuri, and Kannada were also spoken.

Cricket is the most popular sport in Thane. The city has a cricket stadium called Dadoji Kondadev Stadium. Thane's cricket players are part of the Mumbai cricket team. They play in Indian domestic cricket games.
Getting Around Thane
Railways: A Historic Journey
Thane was the starting point for the very first passenger train in Asia. On April 16, 1853, the first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane. This journey covered 34 kilometers (21 miles). Three locomotives named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan pulled the train.
The first railway bridges, called Thane viaducts, were built over the Thane creek. This happened when the Mumbai-Thane line was extended to Kalyan in May 1854.
Today, Thane is connected to nearby areas by the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. This includes the Central and Trans-Harbour Lines. Thane is a busy railway junction. It handles about 654,000 passengers every day, making it one of India's busiest stations. The Thane railway station will soon be updated with an 800-crore project.
Metro System
The MMRDA is planning a large Metro network of 300 km. They have proposed building a special depot for three Metro lines in Thane. These lines are Line 4, Line 4A, Line 10, and Line 11. This depot is planned for Mogharpada, Thane. The total cost for this project is estimated to be ₹596.60 crore.
As of 2019, the areas of Wadala and Thane are being connected by a Metro line. In 2015, the MMRDA approved ₹354 billion for a 118 km Mumbai metro network. This plan includes a 40-km Metro-4 corridor from Wadala to Kasarvadavali.
Thane Municipal Transport (TMT)
The Thane Municipal Corporation started its own transport service on February 9, 1989. It is known as Thane Municipal Transport (TMT). TMT buses serve Thane city and nearby areas. These include Mulund, Borivali, Mira Road, and Navi Mumbai.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) also runs buses from Thane. These buses go to different parts of Navi Mumbai. They also connect to Purna and Bhiwandi. Both AC and Non-AC buses are available.
Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT)
The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) started in 2006. Their buses travel from Dahisar Check naka towards Versova. Since January 2010, MBMT has also started new services to Thane City.

Vasai-Virar Municipal Transport (VVMT)
Vasai Virar Municipal Transport (VVMT) operates two bus routes in Thane. One route goes from Vasai to Mulund, passing through Thane. The second route connects Nala Sopara to Thane Kopri.
Future Transport Plans
There are plans for a light rail network in Thane. It will cover 42 km in three stages. The first stage will connect Balkum and Kolshet. This part will be 16.05 km long and mostly elevated. It will have 11 stations.
