A Look Back in Time

In 1787, a special copper plate was found near Thane Fort. This plate, from the year 1078 AD, mentioned a city called "Sri Sthanaka". For a long time, Thane was an important place for the Maratha Empire. They used it to train soldiers and recruit new ones.

During the First Anglo-Maratha War, the East India Company took control of Thane Fort. However, Maratha forces quickly took it back. Thane remained under Maratha control until the Second Anglo-Maratha War.

Thane was the starting point for the very first passenger train in Asia. On April 16, 1853, the first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane. This journey covered 34 kilometers (21 miles). Three locomotives named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan pulled the train.

The first railway bridges, called Thane viaducts, were built over the Thane creek. This happened when the Mumbai-Thane line was extended to Kalyan in May 1854.

Today, Thane is connected to nearby areas by the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. This includes the Central and Trans-Harbour Lines. Thane is a busy railway junction. It handles about 654,000 passengers every day, making it one of India's busiest stations. The Thane railway station will soon be updated with an 800-crore project.
