Ramune (ラムネ) is a popular Japanese fizzy drink. It was first made in 1884 in Kobe, Japan. A Scottish pharmacist named Alexander Cameron Sim created it.
Ramune is special because of its unique bottle. It comes in a heavy glass bottle called a Codd-neck bottle. This bottle has a round marble inside that seals the drink. The marble is held in place by the pressure of the bubbles. The name "Ramune" comes from the English word lemonade.
The History of Ramune
In 1884, Alexander Cameron Sim brought this fizzy drink to Japan. It was based on lemonade. The drink was sold in its special Codd-neck bottle.
It quickly became very popular with Japanese people. This happened after it was advertised in a newspaper. The advertisement said the drink could help prevent cholera, a serious illness. Today, Ramune is still a popular soft drink. You can find it sold all over the world.
The Special Bottle Design
Ramune is famous for its special Codd-neck bottle. This bottle was invented by Hiram Codd. Long ago, many fizzy drinks used this type of bottle. But now, Ramune is one of the few drinks that still uses it. Another drink, Banta, also uses this bottle.
When you try Ramune for the first time, it can be tricky to drink. You need to learn how to keep the marble from blocking the flow. In 2006, a new bottle design came out. It had small slots in the cap. These slots helped stop the marble from blocking the drink if it fell back into the cap.
You can also find Ramune in plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
Ramune is a symbol of summer in Japan. People drink a lot of it during warm festival days and nights. Empty bottles are usually collected for recycling at the stalls where they are sold.
Different Flavors of Ramune
The first Ramune flavor was lime-lemon. Over time, many new flavors have been made. There have been 57 different flavors of Ramune in total!
As Ramune gets more popular, new bottle designs and flavors keep appearing. Some flavors even come from popular Japanese characters like Hello Kitty and Pokémon. Common flavors include peach, cola, melon, and bubble gum. There are also some very unusual flavors, like takoyaki, curry, and wasabi!
