Ramón Jáuregui Atondo, born in 1948, is a Spanish politician. He is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He has held important jobs in the Spanish government and the European Parliament.

Ramón Jáuregui's Political Journey

Ramón Jáuregui has had a long career in politics. He started by serving in the Basque Government. Later, he became a minister in Spain's national government. He also spent several years working in the European Parliament.

Early Career in the Basque Government

From 1987 to 1991, Ramón Jáuregui was a top leader in the Basque Government. This role is called Vice-Lehendakari. It means he was a very important person in the regional government of the Basque Country in Spain.

Working in the European Parliament

Jáuregui was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) two times. His first time was from 2009 to 2010. During this short period, he worked on important reports. He helped write about the European Union joining the European Convention on Human Rights. This agreement protects human rights in Europe.

He served again as an MEP from 2014 to 2019. In this second term, he had several key roles. He led a group that worked with countries in Latin America. This group was called the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. He was also a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. This committee deals with the rules and laws that govern the European Union.

In 2016, he joined a special committee. This committee investigated money laundering and tax avoidance. It was formed after the Panama Papers were revealed. These papers showed how some people and companies hid money to avoid paying taxes.

Jáuregui also worked with a group focused on Western Sahara. This group helps discuss the future of that territory.

Minister of the Presidency

From 2010 to 2011, Ramón Jáuregui served as the Minister of the Presidency. This was during the time José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was Prime Minister of Spain. The Minister of the Presidency is a very important job. They help manage the government's work and coordinate different ministries.

Leaving Politics

In March 2018, Ramón Jáuregui announced that he planned to leave politics. He did not say exactly when he would step down from his role as an MEP.
