Rancho Huerta de Romualdo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rancho Huerta de Romualdo was a large piece of land, about 117 acres, given out by the Mexican government. This happened in what is now San Luis Obispo County, California. The land was given to a person named Romualdo. The name "Huerta de Romualdo" means "Romualdo's vegetable garden." This land was located between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. It stretched along Chorro Creek and included a hill called Cerro Romauldo.

History of the Rancho

This land grant was first given to Romualdo in 1842 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado. He was a leader in California when it was part of Mexico. The grant was confirmed again in 1846 by Governor Pío Pico. Romualdo was a member of the Chumash people, who are Native Americans from this area.

In 1846, Romualdo sold his land. He sold it to Captain John Wilson. Captain Wilson already owned several nearby ranches. These included Rancho El Chorro, Rancho San Luisito, and Rancho Cañada de los Osos y Pecho y Islay.

After the Mexican–American War, California became part of the United States. This happened with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. This treaty said that land grants given by Mexico would still be honored.

To make sure these land claims were official, the United States passed the Land Act of 1851. This law required people to file a claim for their land. John Wilson filed a claim for Rancho Huerta de Romualdo in 1852. His ownership of the land was officially recognized, or "patented," in 1871.
