Title Liqa Kahnat

Raphael Hadane (born August 12, 1923 – died November 8, 2020) was a very important religious leader. He was known as the Liqa Kahenat (High Priest) for the Beta Israel community in Israel. His original name was Hadana Takoya.

Raphael Hadane's Life Story

Early Life in Ethiopia

Raphael Hadane was born in a place called Seqelt, in Ethiopia. When he was a child, he began studying with the Qessim. These were the religious teachers and leaders of his community.

During a time when Italy occupied Ethiopia, he moved to a town called Ambober. There, he worked as a farmer to support himself and his family. In 1955, he had a chance to learn Hebrew for a short time. An Israeli rabbi taught lessons in Asmara.

Moving to Israel

In 1985, Qes Adana, as he was also known, moved to Israel. This move was a big event for many Ethiopian Jews. He came with his wife and their eleven children. This journey was part of a larger effort to bring Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

A Leader for His People

Raphael Hadane became a strong voice for his community. He believed that the Falasha Mura should be accepted as Jews. The Falasha Mura are people of Ethiopian Jewish descent who had converted to Christianity, but wished to return to Judaism.

In 1994, a special ceremony took place. It marked 10 years since Operation Moses. This was a secret mission that brought many Ethiopian Jews to Israel. During the ceremony, Hadane recited the Yizkor prayer. This prayer remembers those who have died. He said it in both Hebrew and Amharic. This was to honor the 4,000 community members who died while trying to reach Israel.

His Later Years

Raphael Hadane continued to be a respected leader throughout his life. He passed away on November 8, 2020. He was 97 years old.
