Rashard Jamal Mendenhall (born June 19, 1987) is a former American football player. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons. Rashard played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft. He helped the Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII. Later, he played one season for the Arizona Cardinals.

After his football career, Rashard became a writer. He worked on the TV show Ballers.

Early Life and High School Football

Rashard Mendenhall grew up in Skokie, Illinois. He went to Niles West High School. He was a top football player in high school. Experts even called him the best recruit in Illinois.

In his second year, he ran for 1,300 yards. He scored 21 touchdowns. As a junior, he gained 1,832 yards and scored 19 touchdowns. He averaged 11.6 yards every time he ran the ball. In his final year, he rushed for 1,453 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also played in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

College Football Career

Rashard played college football for the University of Illinois. He joined the football team in 2005. In his first year, he ran for 218 yards. He also caught passes for 82 yards and scored two touchdowns.

In 2006, Rashard ran for 640 yards and scored five touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown. His best college season was in 2007.
