The Chicago Tribune Silver Football is a special award given to the best college football player in the Big Ten Conference. The Chicago Tribune newspaper gives out this award. It has been given out every year since 1924. The very first winner was Red Grange from the University of Illinois. Since 2022, the award has been kept at the Union League Club of Chicago.
Big Ten head football coaches choose the winner of the Silver Football. Each coach picks two players: a first choice and a second choice. Coaches cannot vote for players on their own team. The first-place vote gets two points, and the second-place vote gets one point.
Coaches and media in the Big Ten also pick other special awards each year.
