Chase Young (born April 14, 1999) is an American professional football player. He plays as a defensive end for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

At Ohio State, Chase Young was an amazing player. In 2019, he broke the school record for sacks in a single season with 16.5. He was also recognized as a unanimous All-American and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. In the 2020 NFL draft, the Washington Redskins picked him second overall. He quickly showed his talent and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Early Life and High School Football

Chase Young was born on April 14, 1999, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He started playing football when he was young. In 2013, he went to St. Vincent Pallotti High School. He played different positions like quarterback and tight end. Later that year, he mainly played as a defensive end. In 2014, his team won a championship. Chase also sang in the school choir and played the piano, saxophone, and violin.

Rising Star in High School

In 2015, Chase moved to DeMatha Catholic High School. That season, he made 19 quarterback sacks and 27 tackles for loss. These plays helped his team win the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship. In 2016, he was named MVP at a special college football camp. As a senior, he had 19 sacks and 118 tackles. His team went undefeated and won another WCAC championship.

By this time, Chase was known as one of the best high school football players in the country. He was on the USA Today All-USA team. He also played basketball for DeMatha. His teammate, Markelle Fultz, later became the first pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Both Chase and Markelle wanted to be top picks in their sports.

Chase Young received offers from over 40 universities. In July 2016, he chose to play for the Buckeyes at Ohio State. He liked their family-focused approach and wanted to play for coach Larry Johnson. As a freshman in 2017, he had 3.5 sacks and 18 tackles.

He became a starter in his second year. Even with two sprained ankles, he made 10.5 sacks that season. Three of those sacks came in the 2018 Big Ten Football Championship Game. For his great performance, he was named second-team All-Big Ten.

Ohio State Achievements

In 2019, Chase was named one of the team captains. He tied Ohio State records for sacks (4) and tackles for loss (5) in one game. Later that year, he was briefly suspended for a rule violation, which he quickly resolved. In his first game back, he recorded three sacks. He finished the season with an amazing 16.5 sacks. This broke the school's single-season record.

Chase won many awards that year, including the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award. He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He was only the ninth defensive player since 1982 to be nominated for this award. Chase finished his college career with 30.5 sacks in three seasons. This ranks him second all-time at Ohio State.

Starting His Pro Career

Chase Young decided to enter the 2020 NFL draft early. Many experts thought he was the best overall player available. He was one of 58 players invited to the draft. The draft was held online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Washington Redskins picked Chase Young second overall in the 2020 NFL draft. He signed a four-year contract worth over $34 million. He was the fourth defensive lineman Washington picked in the first round in a row.

Many people thought Chase would win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. In his first game, he had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. He missed one game due to a mild groin strain. In a game against the San Francisco 49ers, he had a sack, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. He even returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown! He was the first rookie in NFL history to do all that in one game. He finished his first season with 7.5 sacks, which was the most among all rookies.

In December 2020, Chase was named a team captain. He was also voted the NFC's Defensive Player of the Month. He was the first rookie in Washington's history to get this award. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year from several organizations. He was also chosen for the 2021 Pro Bowl.

Overcoming Injuries

In 2021, Chase's season was cut short. During a game, he suffered a serious injury to his right knee. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and patellar tendon. The surgery to fix his ACL used part of a tendon from his other knee. This meant he needed a lot of time to recover. He missed most of the 2022 season while healing. He returned to play in Week 16 of the 2022 season.

Moving to New Teams

Playing for the 49ers

On November 1, 2023, Chase Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. He played well with the 49ers, recording 2.5 sacks. This brought his total for the 2023 season to 7.5 sacks. He also had one sack in Super Bowl LVIII, where the 49ers lost in overtime.

Joining the Saints

On March 18, 2024, Chase signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. The next day, it was announced he would have neck surgery. This meant he would likely miss part of the team's training camp. In July 2024, he was placed on a special list for players who are not yet ready to play due to injury.
