Early Life and Education
Allama Rasheed Turabi was born on July 9, 1908, in Hyderabad, which was part of British India at the time. He was the oldest son of Maulvi Sharaf Hussain Khan, a respected and noble person from Hyderabad.
He started his Islamic education at home with his father, who taught him until he was five years old. He completed his early schooling in Hyderabad. Later, he went to Shia College, Lucknow for his intermediate high school studies. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Osmania University in Hyderabad. After that, he received a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Philosophy from the University of Allahabad in India.
Career as a Speaker and Scholar
Allama Rasheed Turabi spent 57 years of his 65-year life serving the Ahl al-Bayt, who are the family of Prophet Muhammad. During this time, he gave over 5,000 religious talks and speeches. He was known for his amazing speaking skills and was one of the most popular Urdu public speakers of his time. He was very good at convincing people with his words.
He was the first person to start giving religious speeches that lasted for ten days or more, focusing on specific topics. He was a good student of Khalifa Abdul Hakim, who guided him in his studies of philosophy and English. Besides his formal education, he also deeply studied Arabic and Persian literature. Knowledge was his greatest strength.
He learned a lot from many famous Islamic scholars. These scholars included Ayatollah-ul-Uzma Syed Hossein Borujerdi and Ayatollah-ul-Uzma Muhsin al-Hakim al-Tabatabai. These important teachers gave him special letters called Ijazah. These letters gave him permission to teach and explain the Quran and Sunnah (the teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad). This was a big achievement for any religious scholar in the region.
Political Involvement
Allama Rasheed Turabi also had a political career. He first worked with Nawab Bahadur Yar Jang. He served as a religious speaker for Mir Osman Ali Khan, who was the last ruler of Hyderabad. Later, he became the head of the All India Muslim League in Hyderabad State.
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, chose him to be the information secretary for the Hyderabad State's All India Muslim League. From this position, Allama Rasheed Turabi did important work to support the creation of Pakistan.
Moving to Pakistan
In 1949, Allama Rasheed Turabi moved to Pakistan after Muhammad Ali Jinnah asked him to. He began giving speeches at religious gatherings (called majalis) in different places in Karachi. He also spoke at Eid Milad-un-Nabi gatherings, which celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. These talks made him very popular among both Sunni and Shia Muslims.
His first Shaam-e-Ghareban Majlis (a special religious gathering) was broadcast on Radio Pakistan in 1951. This became an annual event until his death. He continued to give these talks even when his doctors advised him not to, due to his health. His last major speech was at Khaliq Dina Hall in 1971, where he had a heart attack.
Death and Legacy
Allama Rasheed Turabi passed away on December 18, 1973, in Karachi. He was buried in the Hussainia Sajadia Imambargah in North Nazimabad, Karachi. Among his 13 children were his sons Allama Aqeel Turabi, Salman Turabi, and Naseer Turabi, who also became well-known.
Many important people have talked about Allama Turabi's work as a scholar, especially his way of telling the story of the Karbala tragedy. These people include Justice S. A. Rahman, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, and Iftikhar Arif.
In 2023, people remembered Allama Rasheed Turabi on his 50th death anniversary. He left a lasting impact by helping to organize religious gatherings and processions. He also worked to make sure public holidays were observed during Ashura, a significant time for Muslims. Allama Rasheed Turabi had a special charm that drew many people to his large gatherings in Karachi. People listened to his wise thoughts and insights. He gave nearly 5,000 religious speeches in his lifetime, leaving behind a powerful legacy of knowledge and inspiration.
