Rawson is the capital city of the Chubut province in Argentina. It's located in the beautiful Patagonia region. In 2010, about 24,616 people lived there. It's also the main town of the Rawson Department.
The city is named after Guillermo Rawson. He was an important Argentine Minister. He helped the Welsh people settle in Argentina.
Rawson is about 1,360 kilometers (845 miles) south of Buenos Aires. It's also close to Trelew, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away. People can fly into the Almirante Marco Andrés Zar Airport in Trelew to visit Rawson. The city sits on both sides of the Chubut River.

Rawson has a busy fishing port called Puerto Rawson. It's on the Atlantic Ocean coast. The port is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) down the river from the city.

History of Rawson
Rawson was the first town started by Welsh immigrants. They sailed on a ship called the Mimosa in 1865. Their goal was to create a Welsh colony in Argentina.
When they first arrived, there was an old mud-walled fort on the site. The settlers lived in this fort for several months. They explored the area and built their own permanent homes. Some people think the fort was built in 1853 by hunters. They came to the area to hunt wild cattle. The settlers called the fort by different names, like Yr Hen Amddiffynfa (Old Fortress) or Caer Antur (Fort Adventure).
Between 1885 and 1890, many Italian people moved to Rawson. At first, many Italians worked building railways. Later, many of them started working in trade and business.
The first bridge over the Chubut River in Rawson was made of wood. It was built in 1889 by a carpenter named Griffith Griffiths. He was also a Welsh poet. This wooden bridge was destroyed by a flood ten years later. A new iron bridge was built in 1917. In 2001, the iron bridge was renamed Puente del Poeta (Poet's Bridge) to honor Griffiths. A special plaque was placed on the bridge with information about him.
Rawson experienced big floods in 1899 and 1901. These floods caused many people to leave the town. Many chose to move to Trelew. Because of this, Trelew became the temporary capital of Chubut in 1903 while Rawson recovered. This created a friendly competition between the two towns. Rawson soon became the capital again.
Climate and Weather
Rawson has a climate that is like a cold desert or a cold semi-desert. This means it has hot summers and cool winters. It also doesn't get much rain throughout the year.
